   Does he really believe this? If so, he’s crazy, and no sane person would sit through his gibberish, certainly not for 20 years.

   Or is he just saying it? In which case, he’s profoundly wicked. If you understand that AIDs is spread by sexual promiscuity and drug use, you’ll know that it’s within your power to protect yourself from the disease. If you’re told that it’s just whitey’s latest cunning plot to stick it to you, well, hey, it’s out of your hands, nothing to do with you or your behavior.

   Hmmm. I suppose I should’ve quoted the next graph too, but when I pulled that excerpt — and as I look at it again — it seems to me that since Rev. Wright’s congregation doesn’t presume that he is being disingenuous on the pulpit, so Mark Steyn really is saying they’re insane.

   Or to make what I regard as a very safe argument, there are people in Wright’s church who both believe that Rev. Wright believes what he preaches and who aren’t insane, something Steyn leaves no room for despite the fact that it is certainly, obviously, true.

   Which is to say, there are some in Wright’s church who are haters like Wright. Please forgive Steyn for hoping that there were not genuine haters in the healthiest and wealthiest large black community in the world.

   What’s so appalling about Wright’s AIDS conspiracy theories is that it looks like he’s abusing the pulpit’s authority to endanger the spiritual and physical health of his congregation. Consider several propositions.

   1. When preaching the Word, one has a responsibility to “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

   2. Christ, to be fair, was never shy about warning His listeners about the lake over everlasting fire meant for the devil and his helpers. Yet Christ also preached forgiveness, loving ones enemies, and praying for those who persecute you. Whatever else Wight preached, it seems fair to say that his anti-White sentiments are at least bordering on the unchristian (if not outright blundering across that line).

   3. Breaking down by race and gender, Black men the single most likely group of people to be diagnosed as HIV positive (140,025 diagnoses in 2005). Black women are third (81,257 diagnoses in 2005), and their rate of infection is increasing rapidly, unlike the white HIV infection rate, which is relatively stable. (I’ve pulled these statistics from the CDC.)

   4. Given that HIV is frequently a catastrophe, doesn’t this mean that Wright should at least attempt to stick to the truth about its spread? And doesn’t it mean that preaching that AIDS is a government plot make it that much more likely that Wright’s parishioners will continue the behaviors that put them at risk? To its credit, Trinity UCC has a ministry to people living with AIDS; it seems to understand the science; why, then, is the minister preaching this garbage?

   I absolutely agree that Rev. Wright’s AIDS preaching is abhorrent and indefensible.
