Don’t count on it. They’re still convinced that Joe Biden has appeal to the “working class.” Every time I hear that, it makes me giggle.

Prediction: In the VP debates, Biden will pat her on the head and say, “There, there, little girl,” and she’ll bite his arm off. It’s probable that that will happen only figuratively, but there’s a non-zero chance it will happen literally as well. Before last night they thought she was the sort of thin-skinned diversity candidate they might have chosen (remember people talking about her withdrawing?).

I was wondering how the Democrats were going to squander their chance, and when McCain picked Palin I thought “this is probably it.” Pretty much everything I’ve seen from the Ds on Palin has been remarkably tone-deaf, especially since in other respects they’ve been running a pretty good campaign. “Led with their chin” is an apt description.

I think choosing Palin was a cynical political move on McCain’s part, but it was brilliantly cynical, and it’s working. After last night’s speech, maybe they’ll stop (stupidly) treating her as a fluff candidate.

If McCain manages to pull this one out, I think it’s going to be Palin/Jindal vs Clinton/Booker in 2012.

That’ll be the true watershed moment in American political life. I agree with Heather MacDonald’s point about identity politics, but that slate would consist of 4 non-white/non-male candidates, each of whom can legitimately be said to have earned their spot in the lineup based on merit.
