If Joe Biden said it, it's either wise or else the sort of adorably embarrassing things he says from time to time but doesn't mean. The fact that Joe Biden just made the sort of revealing mistake that would have destroyed Sarah Palin isn't the type of thing to get reported. I scratched my head last night when I heard it, but figured I must be the one in error because there was no way Biden could be that wrong. Even the McCain campaign missed it, but the statement really is quite bewildering. The closest explanation I could think of is that he was thinking of presence of US & French troops during the Lebanese civil war twenty years ago, except, if I recall correctly, (1) it wasn't a NATO operation, but rather a UN peacekeeping force, which (2) had no mandate to fight Hezbollah, which is partly why (3) they drove us out, and not other way around.
