Et tu, Jack Black?

This commits the ultimate sin of political parody: it’s not funny. That’s aside from the obvious tone deafness, refusal to accept that opponents are sincere people with beliefs of their own, and reveling in religious ignorance that one expects from politically active celebrities. All that’s missing is a suggestion that anyone in favor of Prop. 8 is a closet case, though I’m obviously not as smart as these people so it may have been there and just went over my head.

I don’t know if the video was that bad. Many people on the left and right doubt the sincerity of their opponent’s deeply held beliefs. As a personal matter, restricting an individual’s freedom based on one’s own religious beliefs (when that freedom doesn’t actually harm anyone else) is an odious tendency in and of itself.

If you’re really a law student, I hope you’d recognize that you’re stealing a step in your analysis. No one is objecting to a freedom that they think is harmless; instead they believe that defining marriage to include homosexual couples has socially detrimental consequences. Though no one on the pro-gay marriage side accepts this as legitimate, most on the anti side believe it. Perhaps this complete lack of understanding is why the “humor” from one side has absolutely no appeal to the other.

Now that I’m writing about it, I should also note that if gays don’t wish to be snickered at, perhaps responding to a political defeat by writing a song and dance routine wasn’t the best move. Though I will say that, of all complaining interest groups, gays seem the least likely to take offense to stereotyping, largely because they do so much of it themselves. I’ve always liked that.

That is absolutely true and I think there are legitimate arguments there. There’s been an irritating trend to treat this as the only motivating force for Yes-8 voters, most of whom have religious objections to homosexual behavior, let alone any kind of public acceptance of it.

Taking a look at this a second time, the part I find deeply offensive is the accusation that it’s the social right that’s on the offensive in this and are being sneaky about it.
