That there is a philosophical difference between social conservatives and libertarians is undeniable. However, both groups should currently have the same gripe over the the essence of today's problem, what results from the gradual erosion of what was once our constitutional system. This metamorphosis has occured thanks to the Supreme Court spending the last 70 years in Bizzaro Land, applying the constitution where it was inapplicable, while simultaneoulsly refusing to enforce it where honest logic would render action required. The current state of government should be recognized by both Libertarians and Social Conservatives as an extreme bastardization of anything that could resemble an honest and just reading of our constitution. Above all else the two sides should be capable of basing their alliance around returning the political paradigm back to the people and the legitimate battle forum of state and local government. The ridiculously unjustifiable rationalization process the permits our current unsustainable system should be nothing but sickening affront to principles and/or morals of the members of each group.

This kind of thinking is why I could never be a member of today's Republican Party. This isn't so much a civil war as it is a complete repudiation of the one core value all conservatives could agree upon. Libertarians and Social Conservatives were never going to see eye to eye on everything, but the value they did share was liberty. Anyone who has tracked conservative politics for the last 10-15 years could see this coming. The Social Conservative wing of the party were never true believers in liberty, they just wanted to control a different part of our lives from liberals.
