Seriously.
MARDAN, Pakistan — The bomb that ravaged Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming processional in October appears to have been rigged to the clothes of a baby who was held up for the former prime minister to embrace, Mrs. Bhutto said.
A man approached her armored truck, Mrs. Bhutto recounted, and was trying to hand across a small child as her motorcade inched through the thronged streets of Karachi. She remembers gesturing for the man to come closer.
“It was about 1 or 2 years old, and I think it was a girl,” Mrs. Bhutto told The Washington Times in her first public remarks about the baby.
“We feel it was a baby, kidnapped, and its clothes were rigged with explosives. He kept trying to hand it to people to hand to me. I’m a mother, I love babies, but the [streetlights] had already gone out, and I was worried about the baby getting dropped or hurt.”
Mrs. Bhutto would have been killed, she said, if she hadn’t stepped back to loosen the shoes on her swollen feet.
I’m a little confused as to how a bomb small enough to be attached to a toddler could do so much damage but — assuming this report is accurate — jeez.

See, I married me a powerful ugly creature…
BAGHDAD (CNN) — Soldiers manning a checkpoint near Baghdad stopped a wedding convoy to find that the purported bride and groom were wanted terror suspects, an Iraqi Defense Ministry official said Monday.
The Army set up the checkpoint last week in the Taji area, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Baghdad.
The soldiers became suspicious of the convoy because its members — save the “bride” — were all male and because one of the cars in the convoy did not heed orders to stop, the official said.
Also, soldiers said, the people in the car seemed nervous and the groom refused to lift his bride’s veil when soldiers asked him to, according to the official.
Soldiers ordered everyone out of the car, the official said.
Upon inspecting the convoy, soldiers found a stubbly-faced man, Haider al-Bahadli, decked out in a white bride’s dress and veil.
Bahadli was wanted on terror-related charges, as was his groom, Abbas al-Dobbi, the official said.

Osama’s new tape is out. Apparently if we all convert to Islam the attacks will stop. Well, golly Mr. Bin Landen, sir, why didn’t we think of that before!
My favorite bits:
the reeling of many of you under the burden of interest-related debts, insane taxes and real estate mortgages; global warming and its woes…
I invite you to embrace Islam…There are no taxes in Islam, but rather there is a limited Zakaat [alms] totaling 2.5 percent.
Apparently Bin Laden is now attempting to appeal to Supply Siders – this strategy is not without merit since many Supply Siders are also very religiously conservative – I keed, I keed.
Also – what the hell do real estate mortgages and global warming have to do with Islam? I mean if we really want to get down to the basics global warming is allegedly fueled by oil usage, which comes from where? That’s right, the Islamic World. And the recent sub-prime mess? What Allah would have stepped in and given 30 pieces of silver to each borrower to stave off foreclosure? Give me a break.
He goes on to call Noam Chomsky “among one of the most capable of those from your own side,”
Not that anyone really questioned whether or not Chomsky was an America hating ignoramus – but being praised by the biggest America hating ignoramus of all time must give him more street cred no?
“It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interests of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations.”
There it is folks – the Bin Laden doctrine spelled out in black and white. What strikes me right off is – it is the exact opposite of the Bush Doctrine. Spread fascism and religion in order to destroy secular democracy. As much as I fault George Bush for his screw-ups, and there have been many, he did seem to understand the fundamental struggle of our time. If only he had the ability to execute his vision with any sort of competence.
It is further striking that the Jihadi’s are parroting the exact language of the America hating left – blame everything on corporations. I’m not saying that the left wants us to slouch into Islamo-Fascism – but the similarities are too striking to dismiss.

Reason #2345 why Jihadis are awful, awful people:
LONDON, England (Reuters) — Hours before the ringleader of London’s 2005 suicide bombings blew himself up on an underground train, his wife tried desperately to phone him to tell him her pregnancy was going wrong.
Mohammad Sidique Khan, shown here in a matrydom video, was the ringleader of the July 7, 2005 bombings.
…
Khan had taken his wife to hospital for a scan of what was to be their second child two days before the bombings. He dropped her home and said he was off to see his friends.
“That was the last time I saw him,” she said. “(It was) just a normal goodbye — see you later, I’m going out, I’ll be back in a few hours.”
In a will and handwritten note, Khan asked for her forgiveness and understanding.
“You have tried to be a good wife, but I have deceived you,” the letter said, according to Patel. It also contained £400 ($820) to buy toys.
“It was really sad because he mentioned ‘children’ and he obviously thought that the pregnancy had gone ahead.”
Anti-terrorist police arrested Patel in May on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
Although she was released without charge days later, the arrest “turned her life upside down,” she said.
She “completely condemned” the July 7 attacks and said she now wants to rebuild her life with their young daughter.

Theodore Dalrymple explains a downside to terrorist acts that perhaps the terrorists haven’t thought of:
In my youth, I traveled extensively in the Muslim world and lived for a time in Africa with a Muslim family without being aware of any hostility or antagonism on my part toward the religion or culture. Had I been a woman, it might have been different, of course. Contrary to what the late Edward Said, author of the anti-Western “Orientalism,” might have thought, I had inherited no anti-Muslim prejudice.
Now, despite friendly and long-lasting relations with many Muslims, my first reaction on seeing Muslims in the street is mistrust; my prejudice, far from having been inherited or inculcated early in life, developed late in response to events.
The fundamental problem is this: There is an asymmetry between the good that many moderate Muslims can do for Britain and the harm that a few fanatics can do to it. The 1-in-1,000 chance that a man is a murderous fanatic is more important to me than the 999-in-1,000 chance that he is not a murderous fanatic: If, that is, he is not especially valuable or indispensable to me in some way.
And the plain fact of the matter is that British society could get by perfectly well without the contribution even of moderate Muslims. The only thing we really want from Muslims is their oil money for bank deposits, to prop up London property prices, and to sustain the luxury market. Their cheap labor that we imported in the 1960s in a vain effort to bolster the dying textile industry, which could not find local labor, is now redundant.
In other words, one of the achievements of the bombers and would-be bombers is to make discrimination against most Muslims who wish to enter Britain a perfectly rational policy. This is not to say that the government would espouse it, other than surreptitiously by giving secret directions to visa offices around the world. But why should a country take an unnecessary risk without a compensatory benefit?
I think Dalrymple underestimates the ability of multicultie ideology to trump rationality. At least for the moment. If Islamists continue, I suspect that the reaction of the west won’t be rational discrimination but a 21st century pogrom against Muslims. As atrocities pile up, it will be harder to avoid a tragedy.

Amir Taheri gives us a glimpse of intra-Islam feuding [emphasis in original]:
Britain and a few other Western democracies are the only places on earth where Muslims of all persuasions can practice their faith in full freedom. A thick directory of Muslim institutions in Britain lists more than 300 different sects — most of them banned and persecuted in every Muslim country on earth.
A Shiite Muslim can’t build a mosque in Cairo; his Sunni brother can’t have a mosque of his own in Tehran. Editions of the Koran printed in Egypt or Saudi Arabia are seized as contraband in Iran; Egypt and most other Muslim nations in turn ban the import of Korans printed in Iran. The works of a majority of Muslim writers and philosophers are banned in most Muslim countries.
In Britain, all mosques are allowed; no Muslim author or philosopher is banned. More importantly, rival Muslim sects do not massacre each other, as is the case in half a dozen Muslim-majority countries.
The only time that the British media practice self-censorship is when an item might be seen as remotely anti-Islamic. Every British publisher has turned down at least one book proposal for fear of hurting Muslim feelings. “Taking Muslim sensibilities into account” is also the reason given for the cancellation of some art exhibitions and the selection of works on display in others.
Even the most rabid anti-West and pro-terror Islamist clerics are granted visas to come to the United Kingdom and spread their message of hatred (at times, as guests of Mayor Livingstone and his friends). Hamas and Hezbollah are strongly present in Britain; the Islamic Liberation Party, banned in all Muslim countries, has its headquarters in London.
A few thoughts and observations. First, an Islamic civil war seems to be a possibility. Should the West try to head it off? Can it?
Second, if the Islamic Liberation Party is so extreme that it’s banned in Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Libya, what on earth is it doing headquartered in London?

Irshad Manji continues her one-woman attempt to enlighten Islam:
I’m offended that every year, there are more women killed in Pakistan for allegedly violating their family’s honour than there are detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
Muslims have rightly denounced the mistreatment of Gitmo prisoners. But where’s our outrage over the murder of many more Muslims at the hands of our own?
I’m offended that in April, mullahs at an extreme mosque in Pakistan issued a fatwa against hugging.
The country’s female tourism minister had embraced – or, depending on the account you follow, accepted a congratulatory pat from – her skydiving instructor after she successfully jumped in a French fundraiser for the victims of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. Clerics announced her act of touching another man to be “a great sin” and demanded she be fired.
I’m offended by their fatwa proclaiming that women should stay at home and remain covered at all times.
I’m offended that they’ve bullied music store owners and video vendors into closing up shop.
I’m offended that the Government tiptoes around their craziness because these clerics threaten suicide attacks if confronted.
I’m offended that on Sunday, at least 35 Muslims in Kabul were blown to bits by other Muslims and on Tuesday, 80 more in Baghdad by Islamic “insurgents”, with no official statement from Pakistan to deplore these assaults on fellow believers.
I’m offended that amid the internecine carnage, a professed atheist named Salman Rushdie tops the to-do list.
From her lips to God’s ears.

Yesterday I linked to a video of the recent Republican debate in which Ron Paul partially blamed 9/11 on “blowback” for US actions in the Middle East. In light of those comments I would like Ron Paul to explain this:
Pakistan Christians demand help
Christians in north-west Pakistan are demanding government protection following threats of bomb attacks if they do not become Muslims. An unsigned letter received 10 days ago said they had to convert by Thursday.
Militants have been carrying out a sustained campaign to prevent “anti-Islamic” activities in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
Last week they blew up a number of music and video shops in the towns of Charsadda and Tangi.
Living in fear The Christian community, a tiny minority, received an anonymous letter demanding they convert or face the consequences.
The BBC’s Barbara Plett in Islamabad says that while a few families have left, the rest live in fear.
Police say they have stepped up security at churches but Christians complain that not enough has been done to protect them.
“We are in great danger and need protection,” said Michael John, the head of Pakistan’s Catholic Church and a minority Christian parliamentarian.
The warning to Christians to leave Charsadda was delivered to his home.
Clearly these Christians have done nothing to deserve these threats and yet the Religion of PeaceTM has targeted them for destruction. Their reasoning? I think its quite clear that they haven’t established bases in Saudi Arabia. I don’t believe they, at any time, bombed Iraq. No, the only reason is that they are not Muslims.
When is the world, and by “the world” I mean the Left, going to realize that there is a much bigger problem with Islam than simply “radicalized elements”. Clearly most Muslims do not believe as these Pakistani’s do – and yet time and time again we find that Islam is the breeding ground for this kind of fanaticism. There is something seriously wrong with a religion that allows these people to exist and even thrive. Yes Christians have their occasional Tim McVeigh or abortion clinic bomber – but these people are a far smaller minority than radical Muslims – and even the most radical of Christians condemn them. Islam is a religion badly in need of reform – I only hope there are some visionary Muslims out there with the strength and courage to do so.

Jonah has a good column up that begins:
At the annual Cairo Anti-War Conference in Egypt, the hot panel discussion this year was “Bridge-Building Between the Left and Islam.” John Rees, a British Trotskyite, observed: “Where else can you sit down in a single evening and listen to senior people from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, people from the revolutionary left and the antiwar movement from around the globe?”
Gosh, it sounds great. I’m just sorry I missed the rollicking game of Pictionary between the Castroites and the Jihadis afterwards.
Essentially, Jihadis and a certain breed of leftist have decided that the enemy of my enemy is my friend; their mutual enemy seems to be the right of center defenders of Western Civilization. It seems that people bond when they hate something in common; whether these bonds will survive the death of what’s hated is an open question.
Jonah theorizes:
In the 1960s, every would-be revolutionary called himself a Marxist, usually without any serious regard to what Marx wrote, said or believed. The specifics of the ideology didn’t matter, because Marxism was the oogah-boogah word radicals used to scare the fat, lazy bourgeoisie. . . .’
Today, Marxism has lost its oomph. Yuppies drinking five-dollar lattes put Che Guevara T-shirts on their private-school toddlers.
And because nobody thinks Marxists are scary anymore, radicals consumed with hatred for the status quo — for America, for Western civilization or for the plain old dreariness of their boring lives — don’t bother calling themselves Marxists anymore. It’s not that they’re any more or less Marxist then they were before. It’s just that Marxism won’t get a rise out of your in-laws the way it used to.
But Islamic radicalism? Hooboy, that’s where the action is. Of course, not everybody follows the John Walker Lindh route and actually converts to Islam, just as not every Black Panther supporter became a bank robber. But who can deny that this post-colonial, anti-imperialism, indigenous-peoples-and-the-suburban-revolutionaries-who-love-them-unite! stuff is in many respects just a magnet for the same riffraff and rabble rouses of yesteryear?
Sure, there’s much to fear in Jihadism. But there’s also something deeply pathetic about it, too. And that’s worth pointing out.
Pathetic? Yes, but still dangerous. Gavrilo Princip was nothing if not pathetic. Let’s not forget St. Paul’s warning in 1 Corinthians 1:27–
God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty

One must read far into this article about Mayor Bloomberg’s environmentalism before one gets to this jaw-dropper from Bill Clinton (H/T):
Mr. Clinton also spoke of the danger of Iran developing a nuclear weapon, saying he was more worried about a terrorist group obtaining an Iranian bomb than the Islamic Republic using it itself. “Maybe some Iranian leader would think, maybe I can nuke Israel … but we can handle that with a phone call,” he said. “If a nuclear bomb ever exploded in the Middle East, even if it wiped out Israel, the main victims eventually would be all the Muslims around it who would be killed in the nuclear fallout.” [emphasis added]
Mr. Clinton’s comments about Iran seemed at odds with those of Senator Clinton, who has spoken of having him serve as a kind of ambassador at large if she is elected president.
Addressing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in February, Mrs. Clinton said: “We cannot, we should not, we must not, permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. And in dealing with this threat as I have said for a very long time, no option can be taken off the table.”
Mrs. Clinton’s campaign did not respond to calls and e-mails seeking comment yesterday.
Menachem Begin once exclaimed in despair, “Goyim kill goyim, and Jews get blamed!” Wouldn’t the main victims be the Jews who got nuked? If he doesn’t apologize for this, we may start saying, “Bill Clinton, yemach shemo.”
